The acronym TYKS is derived from the Finnish name of the hospital, Turun Yliopistollinen Keskussairaala. The local population recognizes the hospital by this short, apt nickname.
TYKS is one of Finland’s five university hospitals. TYKS is the oldest hospital that has operated on a continuous basis since it gained its roots in the 1756 foundation of the Turun Lasaretti hospital.
TYKS operates as the centre of expertise and development of specialist medical care in Southwest Finland, offering high-quality nursing and health care services in co-operation with other health care units in the area. Furthermore, TYKS actively co-operates with the University of Turku and other educational institutions and science centres.
As a university hospital, TYKS focuses on the most demanding specialist medical care, although more common diseases are also treated in the hospital.
Specialist medical care represents the highest level of the health care chain. In addition to almost all the special fields of medical care, TYKS offers all the special fields of laboratory and imaging services as well.
The most demanding areas include, for example, the care of premature infants, oncological radiotherapy, intensive care, cardiac and neurosurgery, as well as PET and magnetic resonance imaging.
