The unit is open from Monday to Thursday between 7.30 and 15.30 and on Fridays between 7.30 and 14.
The priority is to take care of the diagnostics, treatment, patient guidance and follow-up of adult’s respiratory diseases and disorders of respiratory regulation in hospital district of Southwest Finland.
All kinds of pulmonary diseases are treated in here. The most essential diseases are asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary cancer, pneumonia, occupational pulmonary diseases, parasomnia and hypersensitiveness.
The outpatient department of pulmonary diseases gives guidance and advising both individually and in groups for asthma and COPD patients. There is also a practical nurse who gives smoking cessation guidance at the outpatient department of pulmonary diseases. Smoking cessation treatments are available for all patients at the Turku University Hospital. Smoking cessation counselling are given both individually and in groups.
The outpatient department of pulmonary diseases alongside with other pulmonary units are responsible for tuberculosis treatment and supervising the situation of tuberculosis in the area of Southwest Finland. Some tuberculosis patients are under regimented medical care which means that they’ll take their tuberculosis medicine at presence of a nurse either in their home or at the department. In addition the outpatient department of pulmonary diseases alongside with other pulmonary units arrange teaching and research activities related to pulmonary diseases and allergology.

The most essential part of function in the outpatient department of pulmonary diseases is doctor’s office where doctor work in collaboration with a nurse. In doctor’s office one of nurse’s most important tasks is to give patient guidance. Clinical-physiological tests like the spirometries, the bronchodilation tests, the measurements of exhaled nitrogen dioxide, the histamine provocation tests and the exercise tests are done in the outpatient department of pulmonary diseases. Tests and treatments related to allergy, like skin-prick-tests and hyposensitization are also part of activies in outpatient department of pulmonary diseases. These tests are made in the unit of allergology, where is also part of the facilities of the outpatient department of pulmonary diseases. In outpatient department of pulmonary diseases the patient treatment usually requires different kind of services given by for example laboratory or X-ray department.
