We treat 0–16-year-old children and adolescents in all areas of paediatric surgery and paediatric orthopaedics.

We provide high-quality, family-centred care in all areas of paediatric surgery and are a part of the Tyks Orto unit of excellence. We also treat paediatric patients, for example, in areas of ear, nose and throat diseases and neurosurgery.

Many procedures are performed as day surgery, giving the child's guardian the opportunity to support the child throughout the day. A parent is also allowed to be present in the operating theatre when the child is anaesthetised and when the child goes into post-operative monitoring. On the inpatient ward, the parent can also be present all the time and spend the night by the child.

Patients come to our ward with a doctor's referral, either by appointment or on as an emergency referral. The treatment planner invites the child or adolescent to a pre-planned procedure by letter and calls the home on the working day preceding the procedure. Emergency patients arrive on our ward via the Paediatric Surgery Outpatient Clinic
, Paediatric Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic, Paediatric and Adolescent Emergency Department or Turku Region Joint Emergency Services.

The length of inpatient treatment depends both on the length of treatment required for the procedure and on the child's or adolescent’s individual convalescence period. Emergency procedures can affect the timing of procedures for patients with appointments. It is a good idea to allow a full day for even the smallest procedure.

We work in close cooperation with the central hospitals in our region and with other university hospitals nationwide. We are a part of the European Reference Network on Rare Bone Diseases (ERN Bond).

To improve and develop our work, we welcome feedback on care.

We are a part of the Tyks Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
