We pioneered family centred care in the NICU in Finland. Parents take care of their baby from the very beginning as much as possible. In line with our service promise: We are responsible for the demanding care of newborn babies born in the area of our university hospital. We treat our patients with excellent professionalism, in line with the latest scientific research, constantly updating our competencies. We monitor the quality of our care based on national and international benchmarks. Our outcomes are of the highest international standard. We are improving the quality of care in many ways. Our care is gentle and baby-friendly, even when intensive care is needed. Building on the ‘Close Collaboration with Parents’ Program, we care for babies by listening to parents' wishes and supporting parenting. We provide care in single-family rooms where both parents can stay overnight. We train other hospitals in Finland and internationally, especially in neonatal respiratory care and family-centred intensive care. The Breastmilk Centre receives and processes donated breastmilk and makes it available to newborns treated at the hospital. We are part of the Tyks Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. We work closely with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. To improve and develop our work, we welcome feedback on care. Newborn care We take care of newborns who need intensive care or monitoring: full term babies, preterm infants and newborns requiring surgical operation. Patients are treated from a few days to several months. If the need for intensive care for a newborn is known in advance, parents are welcome to visit our unit before the baby is born. The neonatologist is also happy to meet with parents before the baby is born to explain the baby's care, answer any questions they may have and listen to their wishes. Our unit has a multiprofessional neonatal intensive care team. Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other professionals are involved in your baby's care. In our unit, you will have the opportunity to meet a specialist in infant psychiatry who will support parents and parenting. Visiting Please make sure that you are healthy without any signs of an upper respiratory tract infection (coughing, sneezing or having a fever) whilst visiting the NICU. Siblings are welcome to visit our ward without restrictions if they have no cough or cold. During the Bronchiolitis season, there may well be restrictions for siblings to come and visit, and we will discuss this with you. Grandparents and other relatives/support persons are welcome to visit the NICU as long as parents have given permission and discussed this with the respective bedside nurse. Client fees A daily inpatient fee is collected from inpatient stay. Patients under 18 pay a maximum daily inpatient fee of 7 days a year.
