We treat children and adolescents aged 0-16 years who require continuous intensive care or intensive monitoring.

We are a six-bed unit for children and young people aged 0-16 who need intensive monitoring and care. We treat 450-500 patients per year, with an average length of stay of 2.9 days (2021). We provide a wide range of care for patients from all specialties. We have access to all the consultation and research services of a university hospital. Patients arrive on an emergency basis or as planned, for example after surgery.

Around half of our patients are pediatric patients who come to the unit after a sudden deterioration in their condition. This may be due to a serious infection, a cause related to central nervous system function, poisoning, cardiac or metabolic causes, etc. Almost half of our patients are surgical patients.

Our largest patient groups are

  • surgical trauma and surgery patients
  • patients with serious infections
  • seizure patients
  • patients with diabetic ketoacidosis

We also offer specialised treatments, such as peritoneal dialysis and stem cell collection, in a centralised setting.

In addition to the doctors and nurses working in the unit, patients are treated by specialists in various fields. Many specialist staff, such as a physiotherapist and a social worker, are involved. Hospital clowns also visit the ward regularly.

An important part of care is to focus on and support the whole family. Parents can be involved in their child's care in collaboration with the staff.

To improve and develop our work, we welcome feedback on care.

We are part of the Tyks Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
